Volleyball to meet Georgia Tech on Monday

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Coastal Carolina volleyball team was swept by the UCLA Bruins 3-0 at the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta, Ga., on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, Coastal drops to 0-2 on the year, while the Bruins improve to 2-0.

Coastal's Jalyn Stout finished with a team-high seven kills, while Dilara Unal, Emily Fowler, Agata Lesiak, and Emma Van Elslande tallied six, five, four, and three spikes, respectively. Cagla Bengi (8) and Stout (10) combined with a team-high 18 assists.

Defensively, CCU totaled four blocks as Valentina Varani, Unal, and Stout stopped two kill attempts each at the net. Sydney Lewis finished with a team-high six digs.

UCLA was led by Kiki Horne, and Cheridyn Leverette with 11, and 10 kills, respectively, while Audrey Pak finished with 25 assists.

The Bruins stopped six kill attempts with Brooklyn Briscoe making three stops, while Horne, Anna Dodson, and Pak made two blocks each.

In the opening set, UCLA doubled up the Chants 6-3 before CCU used a 4-1 spurt sparked by a Stout kill and topped off by a kill by Fowler to even the score at 7-7. A 5-2 burst gave the Bruins a 12-9 advantage before Coastal had a second 4-1 surge to even the score at 13-13.

UCLA used an 8-4 run to take a 21-18 lead in the opening set before outscoring the Chants 4-2 to claim the first set 25-19.

The two teams traded the first 12 points in the second set for a 6-6 score before the Bruins took a 14-9 advantage with a 6-3 surge that included two service aces. UCLA took a 2-0 lead in the match by closing out the second set with an 11-5 spurt for a 25-14 win.

In the final set, the two squads played to a 5-5 tie in the first 10 points that saw kills by Stout, Unal, and Lesiak. UCLA opened an 11-5 lead with six consecutive points, followed by a 4-3 burst to lead 15-8. The Bruins finished the sweep by outscoring the Chanticleers 10-7 for the 25-15 win and 3-0 match victory.

Coastal Carolina will close out the Georgia Tech Invitational on Monday, Sept. 2 for a meeting with host Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Ga. The opening serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.
