CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team cruised to a 2-0 win over the UNCG Spartans at the CCU Soccer Complex on Thursday evening.
With the win, Coastal improves to 3-3-2 overall and UNCG falls to 1-5-1.
The Chanticleers kicked off the scoring in the 23rd minute when Stella Lawson fed the ball to Tamlyn Parkes who cut the ball back for Eleanor Ashton. The freshman then smashed in her first collegiate to give CCU a 1-0 lead.
Over the next 20 minutes, Parkes took the lone shot, which was blocked, to hold the score at 1-0.
With just two minutes left to play in the first half, Coastal extended its lead to 2-0 when Rami Rapp slotted the ball to Ashton for her second goal of the match.
At the end of the first frame, CCU led 2-1 in corner kicks and took seven shots while denying the Spartans a single shot.
The Spartans had their first chance of the match when Bailey Gourdine ripped a shot on goal to challenge Coastal keeper Vivienne Carr but was later called offside to keep the score at 2-0.
Ashton was on the hunt for her hat trick, taking shots in the 76th and 82nd minute, but both narrowly missed the mark. Lawson also looked to join the scoring in the 83rd minute when she rocketed a shot off the crossbar, but the Chants were still able to secure the 2-0 win.
"I'm so proud of the ladies for their efforts tonight on both sides of the ball. We needed a response and we got one. I want to say congratulations to El for getting off the mark. We knew it would just be a matter of time. She's so clinical in training and has been working so hard to improve certain elements of her game so I'm so happy for her that it's paid off," stated head coach Jo Chubb. "Just as importantly though, we've managed to grab another clean sheet tonight which is a testament to the girls and their discipline defensively. This is an area that they continue to grow in and is instrumental in helping us win games. Excited for the next one!"
The Chanticleers will remain at the CCU Soccer Complex to take on Davidson on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.
