CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team was topped by the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs, 1-0, on Saturday evening at the CCU Soccer Complex.
With the loss, the Chants fall to 1-5-0 overall and Gardner-Webb improves to 4-1-1.
Evan Howard looked to get Coastal on the board in the 22
nd minute when he fired the Chants' first shot on goal but it was met by the hands of the Gardner-Webb keeper to hold the score at 0-0.
The Bulldogs took back-to-back shots-on-goal in the 27
th and 28
th minutes but Coastal's keeper
Tristan Himes dealt with the danger to keep the score level.
In the remaining 17 minutes of the first frame,
Gudjon Stefansson and
Jimson St. Louis each rattled off shots but neither hit the mark to end the period at 0-0.
At the end of the first half, Coastal led 4-3 in shots and both teams tied with one corner apiece.
Coastal came out firing in the second frame when
Loed Klaasen smashed the ball toward the bottom left corner of the net, but the Bulldogs' keeper made an excellent save to deny the Chants.
In the 68
th minute, Gardner-Webb was able to break through the Coastal defense when Tiaho Campos' shot was palmed away by Himes, but only as far as Caio Hughes, who ripped the ball into the back of the net to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
CCU searched for an equalizer in the final 20 minutes of the match, taking three shots with two on-goal, but Gardner-Webb held strong to secure the 1-0 victory.
The Chants will hit the road on Sept. 21 to open up conference play versus Georgia State at 7 p.m. ET.
