NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team downed the Belmont Bruins, 1-0, on Thursday night in Nashville, Tenn.
The Chants improve to 2-2-1 on the season and Belmont falls to 1-5-0.
It was an even battle in the opening 30 minutes of action with each team taking three shots apiece. Coastal looked to break through in the 28th minute when Silje Nilsen and Madison Micheletti fired back-to-back shots, but the Bruins defense fended off the danger.
CCU dominated possession in the remaining 15 minutes of the half, taking four shots while denying Belmont a single attempt. However, none of the Chants' attempts hit the mark to hold the score at 0-0.
The Chants took the lead in the 64th minute when Julia Ziegenfuss was taken down in the box to award CCU with a penalty kick. Redshirt sophomore Tamlyn Parkes stepped up to the penalty spot and buried the ball into the top right corner to give Coastal a 1-0 lead.
It was déjà vu in the 73rd minute when Ziegenfuss was fouled in the box for the second time in the match to give Coastal another penalty kick. However, Parkes could not replicate her goal on her second attempt to hold the score at 1-0.
The Bruins had a last-ditch attempt in the 85th minute, but Ava Labocki's header did not have enough power to threaten Coastal keeper Aris Lamanna, which ultimately allowed CCU to secure its second straight 1-0 shutout victory.
"I'm really proud of the composure the girls showed tonight, but I think the most encouraging thing is that we've managed to keep another clean sheet and very much limited Belmont's chances. They are a tough team to play against," stated head coach Jo Chubb. "They're resilient and play the full 90 minutes, you can't afford to switch off for a second so for us to limit their chances and coming away without conceding is extremely pleasing, full credit to the entire group."
"The entire travel squad earned playing time tonight to really put in a true team performance. Tonight, we rest and recover, before getting back to it tomorrow, to prepare for an incredibly strong Lipscomb team."
The Chanticleers will remain on the road to take on Lipscomb on Sept. 8 in Nashville, Tenn. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET.
