CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Coastal Carolina volleyball team picked up two wins on the opening day of the Cavalier Classic in Charlottesville, Va., on Friday evening as the Chants knocked off Hofstra 3-1 in the early game before sweeping Virginia 3-0 in the nightcap. With the wins, the Chanticleers improve to 2-3 overall, while the Pride and Cavaliers drop to 2-2 and 3-1 on the season.
COASTAL 3, HOFSTRA 1
Coastal's
Jalyn Stout finished with a match-high 20 kills, while
Agata Lesiak and
Emily Fowler tallied 12 and career-high 12 spikes, respectively.
Cagla Bengi (20) and Stout (17) combined for 37 of the Chants' 49 assists.
Defensively, CCU totaled nine blocks as
Dilara Unal finished with a team-high five stops, while
Valentina Varani and Fowler stopped four kill attempts each at the net.
Sydney Lewis and Stout finished with a team-high 14 digs, as Stout recorded her second triple-double of the season and 16th of her career.
Hofstra was led by Izadora Stedile, Clara Bal, and Beatriz Braga with 15, 12, and 10 kills, respectively, while Ellie Pamatat finished with 25 assists.
The Pride stopped five kill attempts with Emilly Nunes making four stops, while Braga and Chiara Cucco tallied 15 digs each.
The opening set went back and forth as the two teams traded the first 20 points to remain even at 10-10 as Stout tallied three kills. Hofstra used a pair of 2-0 runs to take a 14-13 advantage only to see the Chanticleers take a 19-16 lead with a 6-2 run, highlighted by three kills by Lesiak.
The Pride answered with a 5-1 spurt to take a 21-20 lead before Coastal picked up the win at 25-22 with a 5-1 burst sparked by a Hofstra miscue and topped off by a Pride service error.
Coastal took a 6-2 lead in the second set, as Varani teamed up with both Fowler and Stout to stop a pair of kill attempts. The Pride answered with a 9-3 surge to take an 11-9 advantage before Coastal responded with three straight points, highlighted by kills by Fowler and
Lauren Malone to take a 12-11 lead. The two squads traded the next 11 points to even the score at 17-17 before Hofstra took a 19-17 lead on back-to-back kills by Nunes and Braga.
After a 3-0 spurt by CCU, the pride responded with four unanswered to take a 23-20 advantage. Coastal cut the deficit to one at 23-22 on back-to-back kills by
Emma Van Elslande and Fowler only to see the Pride score two of the final three points to even the match at 1-1 with the 25-23 second set victory.
In the third set, the Chanticleers raced to a 6-3 lead sparked by a Lesiak kill and topped by a Fowler kill before Hofstra scored the next four points to take a 7-6 lead. Both teams fired off 3-0 bursts before CCU tied the score at 10-10 on a kill by Stout. The Pride outscored the Chants 9-5 as they pushed in front 19-15. Coastal forced Hofstra to call both of its timeouts with a 7-1 spurt to take a 22-20 lead before scoring three of the final five points to win the third set 25-22.
In the final set, the Chants forced three Pride errors to take a 5-4 lead only to see Hofstra use a 7-3 run for an 11-8 advantage. CCU responded with a 6-2 run to take a 14-13 lead, sparked by a
Siri Engstrom kill and topped off by an unforced miscue by the Pride.
Hofstra scored three straight points to take a 16-14 lead before Coastal outscored the Pride 7-2 to go in front 21-18. The two teams traded the final eight points to give the Chanticleers their first win of the season with a 25-22 fourth-set win.
COASTAL 3, VIRGINIA 0
The host Cavaliers scored the first four points to take a 4-0 lead before the Chants used a 5-1 surge to even the score at 5-5. Virginia took an 8-6 lead before CCU outscored the Hoos 16-2 to take a 22-10 lead. Coastal traded the final seven points to win the opening set 25-14.
The Chanticleers raced to a 6-2 lead, ignited by a Fowler kill and capped by an unforced Cavalier miscue. However, UVA used a 3-0 spurt to pull within one at 6-5 before the two teams traded the next 10 points to allow CCU to take a two-point lead at 12-9. Virginia used a 6-1 burst to take a 15-13 lead before Coastal battled back with an 8-3 run to lead 21-18. CCU outscored the Cavaliers 4-3 for the 25-21 second set win and 2-0 match lead.
In the final set, the two squads traded the first 10 points for a 5-5 score before Coastal scored six unanswered points to lead 11-5, highlighted by two kills by Malone. The Chants increased its score to 15-9 as the two teams traded the next eight points only to see UVA cut the deficit to 16-13 with a 4-1 spurt.
Coastal opened the lead to seven at 21-14 with a 5-1 burst, including three kills by Malone. Virginia would get as close as five with a 4-2 surge to trail 23-18 before Stout closed out the set and match with the kill for the 25-18 third-set win and finish off the 3-0 sweep.
Coastal Carolina will wrap up the Cavalier Classic on Saturday, Sept. 7 for a meeting with host Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. The opening serve is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET.
