Williams Named ABCA Assistant Coach of the Year

CONWAY, S.C. — Coastal Carolina pitching coach Matt Williams has been named the 2025 Division I Baseball Assistant Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), the organization announced Wednesday.

Williams, who was also honored as the D1Baseball.com Assistant Coach of the Year in July, played a pivotal role in the Chanticleers' remarkable run to the College World Series Finals. Under his leadership, Coastal's pitching staff ranked second nationally and led the Sun Belt Conference in both ERA (earned run average) and WHIP (walks plus hits per inning pitched).

The Chanticleers capped the 2025 season with a school-record and nation-leading 56 wins, capturing the Sun Belt regular-season and tournament titles, as well as regional and super regional championships. They went undefeated (3-0) in Omaha, advancing to the Men's College World Series Championship Finals. During the final stretch of the season, Coastal posted a 26-game winning streak — the fourth-longest in Division I over the past five years.

Williams guided a resurgent pitching staff anchored by standout starters Jacob Morrison, Cameron Flukey, and Riley Eikhoff, who combined to lead the team to a 3.22 ERA — the fifth-best in program history. That mark was a dramatic improvement from Coastal's 5.83 ERA in 2024 and 6.25 in 2023.

Morrison (12-1), the ABCA/Rawlings Division I National Pitcher of the Year, finished tied for third nationally in wins and was a consensus First-Team All-American (ABCA/Rawlings, College Baseball Foundation, D1Baseball, and NCBWA).

Flukey, a D1Baseball Third-Team All-American, delivered under pressure, logging 22.0 innings, 25 strikeouts, and a 3.27 ERA in four NCAA Tournament appearances — including 10.0 innings, 12 strikeouts, and a 2.70 ERA in Omaha.

Eikhoff posted a 3.10 ERA, lowering his mark by nearly two full runs from 2024. He also improved his strikeout rate from 6.7 to 7.1 per nine innings and reduced his walk rate from 1.8 to an elite 1.1 per nine innings.

Coastal's bullpen was equally dominant. Ryan Lynch led the team with a 0.56 ERA and nine saves, striking out 26. Dominick Carbone added six saves and 52 strikeouts, while Matthew Potok, Darin Horn, Hayden Johnson, and Scott Doran combined to go 15-2 with four saves.
