Coastal Carolina Heads West To Take On Grand Canyon

PHOENIX — Coastal Carolina heads west for its first trip to Arizona in more than three decades when the Chanticleers face Grand Canyon on Saturday in a non-conference match-up in Phoenix.

The Chanticleers (6–4) are coming off an 88–84 road win at Winthrop last weekend, completing their first season sweep of the Eagles since 2011. Rasheed Jones scored a career-high 23 points and added five assists, while AJ Dancler had 18 points and Reggie Hill finished with 14 points and nine rebounds. Coastal shot 48.3% from the field and knocked down 12 3-pointers, overcoming a seven-point second-half deficit.

Coastal has leaned on a balanced perimeter trio this season. Jones (15.0 ppg), Dancler (14.7) and Joshua Beadle (14.7) rank as the team's top three scorers and leaders in minutes, field goals, free throws and assists. The Chanticleers have also been strong defensively, holding opponents to 36.7% shooting — the ninth-best mark in Division I — and leading the Sun Belt in three-point percentage defense (28.6%).

Grand Canyon (5-4), in its first season as a member of the Mountain West Conference, was picked fourth in the league under sixth-year coach Bryce Drew after winning the WAC championship three straight years. The Lopes signed seven transfers in a top-40 transfer class and have been led by UNLV transfer Jaden Henley, who ranks fourth in the MWC at 17.6 points per game. Nana Owusu-Anane is averaging 10.2 rebounds, tops in the conference.

The Lopes enter with one of the Mountain West's top defenses, holding opponents to 68.4 points per game and 43.7% shooting. Grand Canyon is 4–1 at home with an average margin of victory of 15.4 points.

Saturday marks just the second meeting between the programs and the first since Coastal's 60–58 win in the 2016 CIT quarterfinals.
