ROCK HILL, S.C. —
Rasheed Jones scored a career-high 23 points, and Coastal Carolina posted an 88–84 win over Winthrop on Saturday afternoon at Winthrop Coliseum to complete the season-series sweep.
The Chanticleers (6–4) shot 48.3 percent from the field and connected on 12 3-pointers, taking a 45–44 halftime lead before navigating a back-and-forth second half that featured nine ties and seven lead changes.
Winthrop (5–5) opened the second half on an 11–4 run to take a 55–48 lead 4:15 out of the locker room. Coastal countered with a 15–6 surge, reclaiming the lead at 63–61 on a 3-pointer by
Reggie Hill.
Coastal built a five-point advantage with 4:14 remaining, but Winthrop responded by tying the game at 84–84 on an old-fashioned three-point play by Daylen Berry with under a minute to play. Berry had a chance to give the Eagles the lead with 10 seconds remaining, but his pull-up jumper missed, and the Chanticleers secured the rebound.
Joshua Beadle was fouled shooting a 3-pointer with three seconds left and calmly converted all three free throws to give Coastal an 87–84 lead. Winthrop then turned the ball over on the ensuing inbounds play, and
Tristan Thompson knocked down one of two free throws to seal the victory.
"That's a tournament quality team that we beat today," Chanticleer head coach
Justin Gray said. "The coaching staff did a great job with the game plan. We're continuing to learn a lot about ourselves, but what we are really looking for is growth. We definitely had that on both sides of the ball today."
AJ Dancler finished with 18 points, hitting five 3-pointers, while Hill added 14 points and nine rebounds. Beadle contributed 12 points and four assists, and Jones also handed out five assists for Coastal.
Winthrop was led by Kareem Rozier with 19 points, Kody Clouet with 18, and Logan Duncomb, who recorded 16 points and 12 rebounds. The Eagles held a 47–35 rebounding advantage and attempted 34 free throws, but Coastal's ability to limit turnovers (eight) and convert at the line (20 of 26) proved decisive.
The Chanticleers return to action Saturday, Dec. 13, against Grand Canyon in Phoenix.
