Baseball Drops 15-5 Midweek Decision

CONWAY, S.C. — Charleston tagged a three-run homer in the first inning and never looking back, handing Coastal Carolina baseball a 15-5 loss, the Chants first of the season, Tuesday night at Springs Brooks Stadium.

Charleston (3-1) pounced early, scoring three runs in the first off Landon Penfield's homer. Penfield tripled and later scored in the third, then added an RBI single during a five-run fourth inning that put the Cougars firmly in control. Rafael Soto also shined, going 3-for-6 with three RBIs and two doubles.

The Chanticleers (4-1) struggled to keep pace, managing just seven hits. Brice Estep's two-run homer in the seventh provided a late spark, but the deficit was too large to overcome. Domenico Tozzi and Blake Barthol each added RBIs for Coastal.

Alex Lyon (1-0) earned the win for Charleston, allowing two runs (both earned) over three innings. Coastal starter Oliver Ellison (0-1) took the loss, surrendering three runs in just over an inning of work.

Charleston out-hit Coastal Carolina 14-7 and took advantage of 16 walks issued by Chanticleer pitching. The game ended after eight innings due to the 10-run rule.
