JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Coastal Carolina erupted for four runs in the seventh inning, highlighted by
Freddy Rodriguez's dramatic inside-the-park home run, to secure a 10-3 win over No. 12 NC State on the final day of the JAX College Baseball Classic at VyStar Ballpark.
With the Chanticleers leading 6-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Rodriguez found himself in a battle at the plate. Down 0-2, he worked the count full before launching the ninth pitch deep to right field. As the ball ricocheted off the wall, Rodriguez sprinted around the bases, sliding home safely for a rare inside-the-park grand slam, capping Coastal's offensive outburst.
Rodriguez finished the day 1-for-3 with four RBIs and three runs scored.
Domenico Tozzi also made a major impact, launching a two-run homer in the first inning to set the tone for Coastal Carolina (6-2).
On the mound,
Riley Eikhoff (2-0) earned the win, tossing 5.2 innings and allowing three runs (two earned) while striking out six.
Hayden Johnson secured the save with 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.
NC State (3-4) took an early 1-0 lead in the first, but Coastal quickly responded with Tozzi's blast. The Wolfpack briefly rallied in the sixth, cutting the deficit to 4-3 on RBIs from Michael Fraasman and Jacob Sosa, but Coastal's bullpen shut the door from there.
The Chanticleers capitalized on timely hitting and aggressive baserunning, while NC State struggled offensively, managing just four hits and committing a costly error.
