Conway, S.C. – Emilia Tenbrock scored a season high 15 points to lead three players in double figures as Coastal Carolina exploded for a lopsided 88-57 win over Appalachian State in a Sun Belt conference women's basketball game Friday night at the HTC Center.
Tenbrock, a 6'1" senior from Germany, was supported by
Kristin Williams, who had 13 points, and
Jaylen Ponder, who had 10. But all 12 players on the roster scored for Coastal, as the Chanticleers improved to 22-7 overall and 12-6 in the league. With the win, the Chanticleers finished the regular season with a 14-2 record at home.
Tenbrock led the Coastal long-range scoring effort with five three-pointers. In all, seven players hit three-pointers, leading the Chanticleers to a season high of 14 made buckets (14-of-32) from beyond the arc.
Tenbrock also led her team with seven rebounds and four steals.
"I couldn't be happier for that young woman, especially on senior night" said Coastal head coach
Kevin Pederson of Tenbrock after the game. "What else could you ask for heading into the conference tournament. I am so glad for this special season to be culminated in a win like this tonight."
Emily Carver scored 11 points to lead Appalachian State, which has now lost seven consecutive games and is now 13-16 overall and 9-9 in the conference. Coastal lost to Appalachian State earlier in the season, 63-60, but this time it was different. Coastal had three scoring runs of 9-0 and led by as many as 37 points at the end of the game.
Coastal wasted little time before firing and hitting from long range. Williams and Tenbrock hit back-to-back three-pointers out of the gate, and then
Dalanna Carter and Ponder closed the first quarter with three-pointers to give the Chanticleers a 23-9 lead at the end of the first 10 minutes.
Appalachian State rallied briefly, but Coastal countered with a 9-0 run to go ahead by 16, at 34-18, on Brooks' layup. Williams and Tenbrock again swished back-to-back three-pointers to close the second period, giving Coastal a 40-23 advantage at the half. The Chanticleers already had eight three-pointers (8-of-16) in the first two periods. Williams had three of them, and 11 points at the half.
Coastal continued to pour it on in the third quarter. The Chants had another 9-0 run early in the period on their way to a 28-point lead, 62-34.
Coastal now heads to the Sun Belt Conference Championship Tournament, which runs from March 4-10 at the Pensacola (Fla.) Bay Center.
