CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina softball team dominated on day two of the Kickin' Chicken Classic, defeating Purdue Fort Wayne 7-1 and shutting out Creighton 6-0.
Brie Normandin led the offense, going 5-for-6 at the plate with three runs and one RBI. Coastal's pitching staff also impressed, allowing just one run over two complete games.
Purdue Fort Wayne 1, Coastal 7
Purdue Fort Wayne was first to get on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning when Addison Zimpleman cracked a leadoff opposite-field home run to give the Mastodons a 1-0 lead.
The Chants responded in the bottom of the third inning when
Libby Pippin and
Delaney Keith belted back-to-back home runs to put Coastal in front 3-1.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Chants added another run when freshman
Reese Collier smashed her first collegiate home run into the left-field palm trees to make the score 4-1.
Coastal capitalized on back-to-back singles from
Brie Normandin and
Clara Hudgens in the bottom of the fifth inning when Keith sent Normandin home on a sacrifice fly to center field to put CCU up 5-1.
The Chants put the game to bed in the bottom of the sixth inning after Collier and Normandin each recorded RBI singles to give Coastal a 7-1 victory.
Nicolette Picone pitched her second complete game of the year, allowing just one run on two hits to claim her second win in the circle.
Creighton 0, Coastal 6
In game two, Coastal piled on six runs in the bottom of the third inning thanks to excellent baserunning from Normandin and Hudgens followed by two-run doubles by
Keirstin Roose and
Livi Payne to put the Chants up 6-0.
The Chants looked to extend their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when they loaded the bases with a single, double, and a walk. However, Creighton's freshman pitcher Abby Rusher held her nerve to retire the side and keep the score at 6-0.
Sophomore
Abby Henderson held the Bluejays at bay for the remaining three innings to earn her first win of the season. She allowed just one hit and struck out three batters over her complete-game performance.
The Chanticleers will be back in action on Feb. 12 to take on the North Carolina Tar Heels at St. John Stadium. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. ET.
