CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina softball team bounced back on day two of the Chanticleer Showdown defeating Wisconsin 4-3 and the UConn Huskies 7-6.
Wisconsin 3, Coastal 4
After three scoreless innings, the Badgers utilized a sacrifice bunt and a double steal to scratch across two runs to make the score 2-0.
Wisconsin's Hilary Blomberg added another run in the top of the fifth on an RBI single to put the Badgers up 3-0.
Coastal's offense ignited in the bottom of the sixth frame, sparked by a two-run home run from
Keirstin Roose to narrow the gap to 3-2.
Maddy Jennings and
McKennah Metzger followed with back-to-back doubles to tie the game at 3-3.
Reese Collier delivered the go-ahead run when she laced an RBI single through the right side, lifting the Chanticleers to a 4-3 comeback victory.
Abby Henderson improved to 5-1, recording a career-high seven strikeouts in her third complete game of the season.
UConn 6, Coastal 7
Coastal struck first in the bottom of the third inning, scoring on a
Libby Pippin sacrifice fly and a wild pitch. The Chants then put runners on first and second with consecutive walks, and Roose followed with her second home run of the day to put CCU up 5-0.
The Chants added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth when Metzger launched a solo shot into the batting cages, making it 6-0.
Coastal extended its lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth when Roose hit her team-leading seventh double of the season to drive in
Delaney Keith.
The Huskies clawed their way back into the game in the top of the sixth inning, scoring six runs on a single, a double, and two home runs to cut the deficit to 7-6.
Relief pitcher
McKennah Metzger secured the final three outs to pick up her first collegiate save, while
Nicolette Picone improved to 7-1 on the season.
