CONWAY, S.C. — No. 24 Coastal Carolina opened Sun Belt Conference play with a 5-1 victory over Georgia Southern on Friday night at Springs Brooks Stadium, backed by a dominant performance from starting pitcher
Jacob Morrison.
Morrison (3-0) turned in a career-long outing, working 7 2/3 innings while allowing just three hits and one walk. The right-hander struck out 10 batters, tying his career high set against Davidson on March 3, 2023. He threw 102 pitches, 75 for strikes, before handing the ball to
Ryan Lynch, who recorded the final four outs.
The Chanticleers (13-5, 1-0 Sun Belt) capitalized on key offensive moments, starting with
Dean Mihos' RBI double in the third to open the scoring.
Walker Mitchell added a solo home run in the fourth, and Coastal tacked on two more runs in the fifth on a groundout and a wild pitch.
Caden Bodine drove in the final run with a seventh-inning RBI single.
Georgia Southern (10-7, 0-1 Sun Belt) managed its lone run in the eighth when Josh Tate hit a solo home run off Lynch. Eagles starter Kade Grundy (2-2) took the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits over 6 2/3 innings.

Due to projected inclement weather on Sunday, the teams will close out the weekend series with a Saturday twin bill. Game one will start at 1 p.m. ET while game two will start 45 minutes after the end of game one. Both games will be available on the Chanticleer Sports Network and ESPN+.
