CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina softball team suffered a 14-12 loss to Texas State on Sunday afternoon at St. John Stadium.
With the loss, the Chanticleers fall to 26-7 overall and 3-3 in Sun Belt play.
Keirstin Roose opened the scoring with a two-run home run over the center-field wall in the bottom of the first inning, giving the Chants an early 2-0 lead.
Texas State responded in the top of the second, plating five runs on a home run, a double, and a single to take a 5-2 advantage.
In the bottom of the frame, Coastal cut the deficit to 5-4 when
Maddy Jennings smashed a two-run home run over the center-field wall.
The Chants carried that momentum into the third inning.
Delaney Keith led off with a solo home run, followed by Roose, who belted her second homer of the day to give Coastal a 7-5 lead. The scoring continued as
Libby Pippin laced a two-run single, extending the advantage to 9-5.
Texas State trimmed the deficit in the fourth when Abby Garza and Aiyana Coleman each hit RBI singles, making it a 9-7 game.
Coastal answered in the bottom half of the inning with three insurance runs. Keith and
Georgia Hood launched back-to-back home runs, and Jennings added an RBI single to push the Chants' lead to 12-7.
The Bobcats narrowed the gap in the top of the sixth as Coleman crushed a two-run home run over the center-field wall to cut the deficit to 12-9.
Texas State completed the comeback in the seventh, scoring five runs on a home run, a sacrifice fly, and a single to secure the 14-12 victory.
Abby Henderson (8-4) took the loss, allowing six runs on six hits over 2.1 innings.
The Chanticleers will return to action for a three-game series versus the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns on March 28-30.
