CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — No. 24 Coastal Carolina battled No. 4 North Carolina into extra innings before falling 5-4 in 11 frames Tuesday night at Boshamer Stadium.
The Tar Heels (13-0) pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the 11th when Patrick Gallagher's sacrifice fly brought home Alex Van De Brake to seal the victory.
Coastal Carolina (10-3) took a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning behind a trio of solo home runs from
Blake Barthol,
Domenico Tozzi and
Jake Books. North Carolina answered with a two-run triple from Jackson Hargett in the bottom half to tie the game at 3-3.
The Tar Heels reclaimed the lead in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Ethan Kellis, but the Chanticleers responded in the ninth when
Walker Mitchell's RBI single plated
Freddy Rodriguez to send the game to extra innings.
Scott Doran (0-1) took the loss for Coastal Carolina, allowing the game-winning run in the 11th.
Matthew Potok and
Ryan Lynch also saw action in relief, holding the Tar Heels in check through extra innings before UNC broke through.
Jake Books finished 2-for-5 with a home run for the Chanticleers, while Barthol and Tozzi each homered as well.
UNC's Dalton Padgett (2-0) earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief.
