CONWAY, S.C. — The Coastal Carolina softball team produced a walk-off win in the first game of the series, defeating the Georgia State Panthers 2-1 on Friday night.
With the win, the Chants improved to 30-12, 7-6 Sun Belt and head coach
Kelley Green picked up her 500th career win at Coastal Carolina.
Georgia State pushed the first run across the board in the top of the first inning on an RBI groundout to second base, giving the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
The Chanticleers responded in the bottom of the first frame when
Keirstin Roose drove an RBI single to right field to tie the game at 1-1.
After four scoreless innings by both teams, the Panthers threatened to score in the top of the sixth inning when Ashton Schroyer reached on a leadoff single and advanced to third with one out on a wild pitch and a groundout. However,
Nicolette Picone kept her composure and struck out the next two Georgia State batters to escape the inning unscathed.
Coastal finally broke through in the bottom of the seventh inning after
McKennah Metzger crushed a double off the wall in left field.
Clara Hudgens followed with a walk-off RBI single past the third baseman, sealing the 2-1 victory.
Picone improved to 18-5 on the season, allowing just one run while tossing her nation-leading 17th complete game.
