GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Coastal Carolina softball team earned its second straight run-rule victory Tuesday afternoon, defeating UNCG 14-5.
The Chanticleers wasted no time getting on the scoreboard.
Libby Pippin reached on an error, and
Georgia Hood drove her home with a two-run homer over the center-field wall in the top of the first inning.
The Spartans responded in the bottom half of the frame with a solo home run by Loftin over the left-field wall, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
Coastal kept the momentum going in the second inning.
McKennah Metzger led off with a solo shot over the right-center field wall to make it 3-1. A fielding error and back-to-back singles loaded the bases, setting the stage for Pippin, who blasted Coastal's first grand slam of the season to extend the lead to 7-1.
UNCG got one run back in the bottom of the second with an RBI double to center, making it 7-2.
The scoring surge continued in the third. Metzger belted her second home run of the game, and
Delaney Keith followed with a three-run double to right-center, pushing Coastal's lead to 11-2.
The home run barrage rolled on in the fourth inning as
Keirstin Roose and
Reese Collier launched back-to-back homers, tying the program's single-game record for home runs and stretching the lead to 13-2.
UNCG showcased its own power in the bottom of the inning, with Shipley and Micheal each homering to trim the margin to 13-5.
The Chants sealed the win in the fifth when Hood singled to center, driving in a run to enforce the run-rule at 14-5.
Nicolette Picone improved to 20-5 on the season, allowing five runs on six hits over 3.1 innings.
Coastal Carolina will remain on the road for a three-game series against Marshall, set for April 17–19 in Huntington, W.Va.
