No. 21 Baseball Storms Back After Weather Delay to top James Madison, 9-2

HARRISONBURG, Va. – It took a while for the Coastal Carolina bats to heat up — about 23 hours and 45 minutes to be exact.

Once they did, the No. 21 Chanticleers erased a late deficit and erupted for eight runs in the 11th inning to defeat James Madison 9-2 on Saturday, completing a suspended game at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park.

The game began Friday afternoon and was delayed due to inclement weather with James Madison leading 1-0 in the top of the eighth inning. When play resumed Saturday at 3:05 p.m., the Chanticleers (31-11, 15-4 Sun Belt) quickly rallied to tie the game in the ninth on a solo home run by Domenico Tozzi, setting the stage for a decisive extra-inning outburst.

Coastal Carolina sent 12 batters to the plate in the 11th inning, highlighted by a go-ahead two-run single from Ty Dooley and a grand slam by Blagen Pado — his third home run of the season — to break the game open.

Jacob Morrison started and delivered seven strong innings for the Chanticleers before the delay, allowing just one run on three hits with five strikeouts. Dominick Carbone (4-0) earned the win in relief after pitching the final three innings.

James Madison (13-29, 6-13 Sun Belt) had taken a 1-0 lead Friday on a solo home run by Mike Peifer in the fourth inning but managed just one run after the restart. JMU starter Max Kuhle had the Chants stymied Friday, throwing seven innings of shutout ball, scattering six hits, walking none and striking out seven.

NOTEBOOK
  • Pado's Big Blast: Blagen Pado's grand slam in the 11th inning capped a 4-RBI day for the center fielder. Pado worked a 1-2 count into a nine-pitch, full-count at bat before tattooing the 10th offering over the fence in right center field.
  • Tozzi Ties It: Domenico Tozzi's game-tying solo home run in the ninth inning was his sixth homer of the year and gave Coastal Carolina new life after trailing for nearly five innings.
  • Carbone Closes: Dominick Carbone gave up one run over three innings of work after entering in the ninth. He scattered six hits and struck out three to earn his fourth win of the season.
  • Top Performers: Blake Barthol went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Caden Bodine added two hits and was hit by a pitch, reaching base three times.
  • Game Duration: The game started Friday at 4:05 p.m., was suspended at 6:05 p.m., and resumed Saturday at 3:05 p.m. It officially lasted 3 hours, 28 minutes across two days.
