No. 21 Baseball Blanked by Arkansas State in Sunday Finale

CONWAY, S.C. — No. 21 Coastal Carolina couldn't solve Arkansas State starter Jack Hibbard and was shut out for just the third time this season, falling 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Springs Brooks Stadium in the Sun Belt Conference series finale.

The Chanticleers (23-9, 8-4 SBC) managed just three hits, two of them coming in the sixth and seventh innings, but were unable to capitalize against Hibbard, who tossed seven scoreless innings with eight strikeouts. Chase Richter pitched the final two frames to earn the save for the Red Wolves (14-17, 5-7 SBC), who salvaged the series after Coastal took the first two games.

Coastal's best scoring chance came in the seventh when Dean Mihos led off with a double and advanced to third on a flyout. But back-to-back outs left him stranded, continuing a day of missed opportunities for the Chants, who left five runners on base.

Riley Eikhoff (5-2) was charged with the loss despite allowing just one run in three innings of work. The Coastal bullpen was solid, as Matthew Potok, Hayden Johnson, and Scott Doran combined to hold Arkansas State to one earned run over the final six innings.

Defensively, two costly errors helped extend innings, and a wild pitch in the eighth allowed the Red Wolves' second run to score.

Caden Bodine and Mihos each doubled for Coastal, while Chad Born added a pinch-hit single in the eighth, but that was all the offense the Chants could muster. Anytime a Coastal batter hit the ball hard, it was right at an ASU player.
