No. 21 Baseball Rallies Past UNCW for 8–4 Road Win

WILMINGTON, N.C. — No. 21 Coastal Carolina used a balanced offensive effort and strong bullpen performance to take down UNCW 8–4 in nonconference action Tuesday night at Brooks Field.

Trailing 3–1 after two innings, the Chanticleers (24–9) responded with three runs in the third and never looked back. Sophomore third baseman Walker Mitchell delivered a go-ahead two-run single as part of a three-hit, two-RBI night, while senior second baseman Blake Barthol homered and scored twice to lead the way.

Darin Horn (1–1) earned the win out of the bullpen with 3.2 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three. The Chants' bullpen combined for 7.2 innings of one-run ball after starter Luke Jones was tagged for three early runs.

Blake Barthol opened the game with a hit-by-pitch and later came around to score on Mitchell's first-inning groundout. After UNCW (16–17) surged ahead with three runs in the second, Coastal tied it up in the third behind a string of hits from Mitchell, Ty Dooley, and Domenico Tozzi, who doubled in two runs.

Barthol added insurance in the sixth with his sixth home run of the season — a solo shot to right field — and the Chants plated three unearned runs in the eighth, capitalizing on a dropped fly ball by the Seahawks.

Tozzi had two hits and drove in a pair, while Dooley and Dean Mihos each scored twice. Coastal took advantage of six hit-by-pitches and two UNCW errors in a gritty, opportunistic performance.

NOTEBOOK
  • Bouncing Back: After allowing three runs in the second, Coastal's bullpen retired 21 of the final 27 Seahawks, led by Horn, Hayden Johnson, Ryan Lynch, and Dominick Carbone.
  • HBP Parade: The Chanticleers were hit by six pitches, tying a season high. Barthol, Dooley, Bodine, Mitchell, and Sykes were all plunked.
  • Multi-hit Men: Mitchell and Tozzi each had two hits. Barthol reached base three times with a homer, single, and HBP.
  • Mihos on the Move: Dean Mihos didn't record a hit, but scored twice and drew a walk. He also reached on an error during the three-run eighth.
  • Midweek Win: Coastal improves to 6–3 in midweek games this season and will return to Sun Belt play this weekend.
