Late-Inning Rally Lifts No. 8 Baseball Over Old Dominion, 6–3

HAMPTON, Va. — No. 8 Coastal Carolina erupted for three runs in the top of the ninth inning to complete a 6-3 comeback win over Old Dominion on Friday night at War Memorial Stadium.

Tied 3-3 entering the final frame, the Chanticleers (42-11, 24-4 Sun Belt) capitalized on clutch hitting and a series of miscues to seize the lead. Freddy Rodriguez, running for designated hitter Chad Born, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and passed ball before Ty Barrango delivered a full-count RBI single to center to put CCU ahead. The Chants added two insurance runs on a hit-by-pitch and bases-loaded walk.

The late surge backed a career-best outing from Cameron Flukey, who struck out 11 over six innings. Coastal's bullpen shut the door with Dominick Carbone (5-0) earning the win and Ryan Lynch picking up his fifth save.

Walker Mitchell hit a game-tying two-run homer in the sixth — his fourth of the year — and finished with three RBIs to pace the Chanticleer offense, which managed just six hits but made them count.

Old Dominion (21-27, 15-13 Sun Belt) led 3-1 after three innings behind a two-run triple from Luke Waters, but mustered just one hit over the final six frames.

NOTEBOOK
NINTH-INNING PUSH: Coastal Carolina entered the ninth locked in a 3-3 tie but pushed across three runs on just two hits. Ty Barrango's two-out RBI single on a 3-2 pitch was the go-ahead blow. CCU loaded the bases with a walk and two hit-by-pitches before scoring again on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and a walk.

FLUKEY DEALS: Cameron Flukey struck out a career-high 11 over six innings, becoming the first Chanticleer this season to reach double-digit strikeouts in a start. He retired the final 10 batters he faced, throwing 69 of his 98 pitches for strikes.

MITCHELL MOMENT: Walker Mitchell's sixth-inning, two-run homer tied the game at 3-3 and sparked Coastal's comeback. It was his fourth long ball of the season and his second straight Friday with an extra-base hit.

CLUTCH IN THE CLUTCH: Coastal scored five of its six runs with two outs and the Chants loaded the bases in the ninth without an extra-base hit.

UP NEXT: The Chants and Monarchs continue the series Thursday at War Memorial Stadium. Friday's game starts at 3 p.m. ET with TV coverage on ESPN+. Fans can also tune into the Chanticleer Sports Network or listen via the Chanticleer Mobile App.
