MCWS Notebook: Coastal 2-0 With Wins Over Arizona & Oregon State

Coastal Carolina 6, Oregon State 2 – Time of Game 3:08

Attendance 24,490– 2025 MCWS Attendance Total: 146,968 – Average Attendance: 24,495

Coastal Carolina (55-11, 2-0 MCWS):
  • Coastal Carolina moved to 45-44 all-time in 21 NCAA Tournament appearances, including a 7-0 mark under head coach Kevin Schnall.
  • Coastal Carolina moved to 8-2 all-time in the MCWS, having made its second appearance in the MCWS and first trip to Omaha since claiming the national championship in 2016. The Chanticleers are now 8-4 all-time inside Charles Schwab Field Omaha including two non-conference regular-season games at Creighton in 2024.
  • Coastal Carolina is the sixth school to win eight of its first 10 games at the MCWS, and first since California 1980 (others include Minnesota, Holy Cross, Michigan and Texas).
  • Coastal Carolina won the national title in its first trip to Omaha in 2016 and is seeking to become the fifth school to win the title in each of its first two trips to the MCWS, but the first in more than six decades. Texas (1949 & 1950), California (1947 & 1957), Minnesota (1956 & 1960) and Michigan (1953 & 1962) all won national championships in their first two MCWS appearances.
  • LSU Tigers are the only schools among the last 34 MCWS champions to lose their second game in Omaha.
  • Coastal Carolina is just the second Sun Belt school to make the MCWS, joining Louisiana in 2000 (the Ragin' Cajuns went 2-2). The Chanticleers were members of the Big South Conference when they won the title in 2016; they joined the Sun Belt less than 12 hours after hoisting the trophy.
  • Coastal Carolina is one of two schools unbeaten in the 2025 NCAA Tournament (with UCLA). Since the best-of-three MCWS Finals were added in 2003, only three national champions have gone 10-0 in the postseason (UCLA in 2013, Arizona in 2012 and South Carolina in 2011).
  • Coastal Carolina picked up its nation-leading 55th win of the season, improving to 55-11. The Chanticleers 55 wins are tied for its most wins in a single season ever, matching its 2010 total that was tied when CCU won 55 games on the way to a National Championship in 2016.
  • With today's win, Coastal Carolina extended its nation-leading win streak out to 25 consecutive games. The Chanticleers 23-game winning streak entering the MCWS was the longest winning streak entering the event in Division I history.
  • Coastal Carolina leads all teams at the 2025 MCWS with 13 runs scored and is second with a 2.00 ERA.
  • Coastal Carolina is 42-0 this year and has 59 straight games when leading by four or more runs. It's the third-longest active streak nationally behind Lamar (75) and TCU (70).
  • The only previous meeting between OSU and CCU came in 2019, and ended in a 4-4 tie after 11 innings due to a travel curfew.
  • Head coach Kevin Schnall is the seventh head coach to lead his first team at a school to Omaha since the NCAA Tournament expanded in 1999 and the first since Jim Schlossnagle guided Texas A&M to the MCWS in 2022.
  • Kevin Schnall is believed to be the fourth head coach to lead his team to the MCWS in his first year as a college head coach, joining Louisville's Dan McDonnell (2007), Florida State's Mike Martin (1980) and Texas' Cliff Gustafson (1968), and Friday's victory over Louisville made him the only one of those four to win his Omaha debut. That would make Schnall the only first-year head coach to ever win his first seven NCAA Tournament games.
  • Kevin Schnall's 55 wins are the most in Division I history by a rookie head coach. Only CSUN's Mike Batesole (52 wins in 1996) and Florida State's Mike Martin (51 wins in 1980) also won 50 or more.
  • Coastal Carolina was not ranked in the preseason polls by D1Baseball, Baseball America, NCBWA or USA Today and were 23rd by Perfect Game.
  • Coastal Carolina's starting pitching now owns a 2.79 ERA in the 2025 NCAA Tournament, but tonight was the first win earned by a starter.
  • Coastal Carolina leads the country with a program record 172 hit-by-pitches this season, including two on Sunday. The Chanticleers 172 hit-by-pitches are the second-most in a single season in NCAA history, trailing UC Irvine's 175 hit-by-pitches in 2024.
  • Coastal Carolina ranks second nationally with a 3.22 ERA, putting it on pace to be its best ERA since 2012 (2.65). Tonight was Coastal Carolina's fourth NCAA Tournament game holding foes to two or fewer runs, tied with Louisville for the most in the country this postseason.
  • Coastal Carolina had scored one first-inning run in its first six NCAA Tournament games before scoring three runs today.
  • The first inning was CCU's 68th different inning of 3+ runs this season, which have come in 48 different contests. The Chants are 45-3 in those games.
  • Coastal Carolina has outscored teams 53-21 in seven games during the NCAA Tournament.
  • Caden Bodine is one of five catchers to bat leadoff in the MCWS since aluminum bats were introduced in 1974, joining Texas A&M's Jackson Appel (2024), Louisville's Kyle Gibson (2014), The Citadel's Larry Hutto (1990) and Minnesota's Tom Jagiela (1977).
  • Wells Sykes reached base for the 25th straight game and Blagen Pado his 16th consecutive contest.
  • Jacob Morrison now ranks tied for third nationally with 12 wins, is fourth in the nation with a 2.08 ERA and with 104.0 IP, and is tied for fifth with 17 starts.
  • Coastal Carolina is 17-1 when Jacob Morrison pitches this year, and 16-1 when he starts.
  • Jacob Morrison leads the nation with 10 starts of at least six innings while allowing one or fewer runs. The only player with a season of more such outings in the last five years is LSU's Paul Skenes in 2023.
  • Jacob Morrison retired 16 straight batters after allowing a homer to lead off the 3rd inning, the third-longest streak in the MCWS since the 2011 move to Charles Schwab Field Omaha. He trails only South Carolina's Michael Roth (2012 vs. Kent State) and Oregon State's Kevin Abel (2018 vs. Arkansas).
  • Jacob Morrison threw a season-high 109 pitches, his fourth contest with 100 or more pitches this year.
  • Jacob Morrison's 7.2 innings marked the longest MCWS outing since Ty Floyd threw 8.0 innings vs. Florida on June 24, 2023 in the MCWS Finals.
  • Sebastian Alexander extended his team-leading hit streak to six games with a single in the sixth inning.
  • Ryan Lynch made his NCAA-leading 17th straight scoreless appearance while picking up his team-leading ninth save.
  • Before his bases-clearing double in the first inning, Colby Thorndyke had gone four straight games without an RBI since driving in 6 runs in the Regional against East Carolina. He now has 10 RBI in seven games in the NCAA Tournament.
  • Dean Mihos went 2-for-4, scoring once and driving in one. He's had multiple hits in both MCWS games after just one plate appearance in May (injury).
  • Today marked Colby Thorndyke's fourth game this year with 3+ RBI.
  • Coastal Carolina moved to 36-2 when scoring first, including wins in each of their last 28 games when scoring first.
  • Coastal Carolina improved to 39-0 this season when leading after the eighth inning.
  • Tonight's win means Coastal Carolina will play in Game 11 on Wednesday at 1 p.m. CT against the Game 9 winner (Louisville/Oregon State). The Chanticleers will be the home team.
