ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team shut out the Winthrop Eagles 3-0 on Thursday evening in Rock Hill, S.C.
- The win marks Coastal's first season-opening victory since defeating USC Upstate on Aug. 25, 2022.
- It also stands as the Chants' first 3-0 shutout since Nov. 11, 2020, against Georgia Southern.
- Graduate transfer Jaland Larmond opened the scoring in the 29th minute, finding the bottom-right corner off an assist from Loed Klaasen and Jon Almudi.
- At halftime, Coastal held a 7-4 edge in shots and a 1-0 advantage in corner kicks.
- Freshman Angel Lopez doubled the lead in the 52nd minute, recording his first collegiate goal on Klaasen's second assist of the match to make it 2-0.
- The Chants sealed the win in the 85th minute when Christian Cook found the bottom-left corner on a Lopez assist.
- Larmond paced the team with six shots on the night.
- At the final whistle, Coastal led 17-10 in shots, while both teams finished with 10 fouls apiece.
- Goalkeeper Harrison Gough recorded his fourth career clean sheet between the pipes for the Chanticleers.
- Eight Chanticleers in Joaquin Suarez, Giovanni Poliero, Nate Kovalcik, Samuel Murphy, Patrick Shaw, Larmond, Lopez, and Almudi made their Coastal debut.
- Three field players, Suarez, Poliero, and Davis, played the full 90 minutes.
The Chanticleers will return to Conway for their home opener against Longwood on Aug. 25 at 7 p.m. ET.
