HUNTINGTON, W.Va. –
AJ Dancler and
Joshua Beadle scored 26 points apiece, and Coastal Carolina held off a late Marshall rally for an 85-83 Sun Belt Conference win Wednesday night at the Cam Henderson Center.
The victory marked Coastal's first-ever road win at Marshall.
Coastal Carolina (10-9, 3-4 SBC) led by as many as 13 points in the second half before the Thundering Herd tied the game at 80-80 with 58 seconds remaining. The Chanticleers responded immediately as
Nadjrick Peat finished a go-ahead dunk off a
Rasheed Jones assist with 34 seconds left to put Coastal back in front, 82-80.
"Those guards made big plays when it mattered," CCU head coach
Justin Gray said. "AJ made shot after shot, Beadle made shot after shot, and Rasheed made the right play to find Nadjrick for the finish."
After a defensive stop, Beadle was fouled and made both free throws to extend the lead to 84-80 with 18 seconds to play. Marshall's Noah Otshudi hit a 3-pointer with 13 seconds left to cut the deficit to one, but Beadle split a pair of free throws with seven seconds remaining to give Coastal an 85-83 edge.
Marshall (11-7, 3-3 SBC) had two final chances to tie or win. Wyatt Fricks' 3-point attempt missed with two seconds left, and after a foul sent Caleb Hollenbeck to the line with 0.3 seconds remaining,
Tristan Thompson secured the final rebound to seal the win.
"We talk about resiliency and responding the right way all the time, and our guys did that tonight," Gray said.
Dancler shot 8-of-11 from the field, hit three 3-pointers, and went 7-for-7 at the line. Beadle finished 9-of-15 from the floor and 7-of-9 at the stripe. Jones added 13 points and three assists, while Peat delivered the game-winning basket.
Coastal led 39-32 at halftime and shot 56.6 percent from the field, including 45.5 percent from 3-point range, while going 15-of-17 at the free-throw line.
Otshudi led Marshall with 30 points, while Jalen Speer added 24.
Coastal returns to action Saturday, Jan. 17, at Georgia Southern. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
