MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama outscored Coastal Carolina 38-24 in the second half and rallied past the Chanticleers 53-48 Thursday night at the Mitchell Center in a Sun Belt Conference matchup.
Coastal Carolina (13-10, 6-5 Sun Belt) carried a 24-15 halftime lead after limiting the Jaguars to 7-of-29 shooting in the opening half and holding South Alabama without a made 3-pointer. The Chanticleers hit five 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes and led for most of the half.
South Alabama (15-6, 6-3) responded after the break, tying the game at 24-24 on a layup by Chaze Harris at the 16:20 mark and eventually taking its first lead of the second half on an Adam Olsen 3-pointer with 15:09 remaining. The Jaguars knocked down five 3-pointers in the second half and led by as many as 12 points, 45-33, with 6:59 to play.
AJ Dancler capped a 15-3 Coastal run when he connected on a 3-pointer to knot the score at 48-48 with 1:08 remaining. However, Olsen answered with a jumper in the lane with 48 seconds left to put South Alabama back in front for good.
"We talked about keeping the game close late and trying to win it," Coastal Carolina head coach
Justin Gray said. "We had an opportunity.
AJ Dancler had an open shot at the top of the key, but the ball bounced out.
"Too many times throughout the game, we were a little too stagnant against the zone. We weren't as aggressive as we should have been."
Olsen added two free throws with 28 seconds remaining to extend the margin to four, and Randy Brady sealed the win with a free throw with 15 seconds left.
Joshua Beadle led Coastal Carolina with 11 points, while Dancler finished with 10 points on three 3-pointers. RaSheed Jones added nine points and a team-high five assists, and
Reggie Hill contributed nine points and eight rebounds.
Nadjrick Peat recorded seven points, nine rebounds and three blocks for the Chanticleers.
Olsen paced South Alabama with 16 points, while Harris scored 15. Jayden Cooper added 13 points on three 3-pointers, and Brady chipped in six points and five rebounds.
Coastal Carolina returns to action Saturday at ULM. The game is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.
