CONWAY, S.C. — Robert Davis Jr. scored 29 points and Old Dominion used a decisive second-half surge to pull away from Coastal Carolina for a 70-66 Sun Belt Conference win Thursday night at the HTC Center.
The Monarchs (5-12, 2-3 Sun Belt) shot 45.3% from the field and won the rebounding battle, 46-34, turning 14 offensive rebounds into 14 second-chance points. Old Dominion also took advantage of 10 Chanticleer turnovers, scoring 14 points off takeaways.
After missing its first 11 field-goal attempts and falling behind by 10, Coastal Carolina (8-9, 1-4) trimmed its deficit to four and trailed 28-24 at the break. However, the Monarchs opened the second half with a 10-2 run and pushed the margin to 16 at 63-47 on Davis' fifth 3-pointer with 8:13 remaining.
The Chanticleers answered with a late push, trimming the deficit to 68-62 on a
Braeden MacVicar 3-pointer with 3:05 to play. Coastal got the ball back with a chance to make it a one-possession game in the final 20 seconds, but couldn't convert after a steal with 22 seconds remaining.
Joshua Beadle led Coastal Carolina with 18 points, while
Reggie Hill added 16 on four 3-pointers.
Rasheed Jones finished with 10 points, and
Nadjrick Peat had seven points and four blocks.
Ketron Shaw scored 12 points for Old Dominion and Caelum Swanton-Rodger added 10.
Jordan Battle finished with five steals for the Monarchs.
The Chanticleers return to the court on Saturday, Jan. 10, against App State inside the HTC Center. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m.
