CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina Athletics announced the hiring of MaryKate Avant as the department's head cheer coach on Friday.
Â
Avant returns to Conway after previously serving as a volunteer assistant coach with the Chanticleer cheer program from 2021-23. Prior to joining the coaching staff, Avant was a four-year member of the Coastal Carolina cheer team as a student-athlete.
Â
She most recently served as the All-Star Director and Head Coach at Carolina Coast Athletics, where she oversaw program operations, athlete development, staff leadership and team training.
Â
During her time at Coastal Carolina as a student-athlete, Avant was a member of the Chanticleer cheer program for four years before transitioning into her previous volunteer coaching role. Her return to Coastal Carolina brings her back to a program and university with which she has longstanding ties.
Â
Avant earned her bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism with a minor in Sociology from Coastal Carolina University.
Â
As head cheer coach, she will oversee all aspects of the Chanticleer cheer program, including student-athlete development, practices, performances and game-day responsibilities. She will also work to build on the program's tradition while providing Coastal Carolina student-athletes with opportunities for growth both on and off the sidelines.
