CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina dropped a 4-3 decision to College of Charleston on Tuesday at Springs Brooks Stadium
The Chanticleers (3-1) took an early lead with single runs in the second and fourth innings. Jordan Taylor scored on an RBI double to right field by Dean Mihos in the second, and Colby Thorndyke later crossed the plate on an RBI double by Domenico Tozzi in the fourth to give Coastal a 2-0 advantage.
College of Charleston (2-3) answered with a run in the fifth before tying the game in the seventh on an RBI single by Reece Holbrook. Coastal responded in the bottom half of the inning as Trace Mazon scored when Thorndyke reached on a Charleston error to put the Chants back in front, 3-2.
The Cougars secured the win with two runs in the eighth inning on a Payton Frehner RBI groundout and a Jackson Berini sacrifice fly.
Mihos finished 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI, while Mazon added two hits. Scott Doran struck out four over 2.0 scoreless innings in relief. Colby Richardson was charged with the loss, and Kurt Rogers earned the win with 3.0 innings out of the bullpen.
Coastal returns to action Friday when it hosts Baseball at the Beach at Springs Brooks Stadium, with VCU and Illinois also participating in the tournament. The Chanticleers will open play against VCU on Friday at 4 p.m.
