Jones, Peat Lead Chanticleers To Wire-To-Wire Win Over Marshall

CONWAY, S.C.Rasheed Jones scored a career-high 29 points and Nadjrick Peat set a school record with seven blocks as Coastal Carolina led wire-to-wire in a 79-75 victory over Marshall on Saturday at the HTC Center.

Joshua Beadle added 18 points and AJ Dancler chipped in 10 for the Chanticleers (17-12, 9-7 Sun Belt).

Coastal never trailed, using interior defense and work on the glass to control the opening half. Peat rejected a pair of point-blank shots midway through the first half that ignited transition chances, and moments later followed his own offensive rebound with a putback to stretch the lead to double digits. The Chanticleers led by as many as 18 before taking a 36-24 advantage into the break.

Marshall (18-11, 10-6) stormed back with 51 points after halftime behind Jalen Speer's game-high 39-point performance. The Thundering Herd trimmed the deficit to three in the final minute, but Coastal answered with free throws and key defensive stops to secure the win.

Jones was steady throughout, shooting 8 of 15 from the field with four 3-pointers and finishing 9 for 9 at the foul line, including key free throws late. Beadle grabbed six rebounds and delivered timely baskets down the stretch as the Chanticleers maintained their composure.

Peat anchored the difference defensively. With Coastal protecting a late lead, he swatted a driving attempt at the rim and secured the rebound on the next possession before later finishing a dunk in the closing minute to push the margin back to two possessions. Coastal finished with 10 blocks — including two from Tristan Thompson — and Peat's seven swats broke the program's single-game record while helping the Chanticleers win the rebounding battle 47-42.

Noah Otshudi scored 18 points for Marshall as the Herd made a late push, but Coastal made enough plays at both ends to secure the Sun Belt victory in Conway.

The Chanticleers will finish up the regular season with a pair of road games next week, the first coming Tuesday, Feb. 24, in Atlanta against Georgia State.
