CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina split Sunday's doubleheader at Springs Brooks Stadium, bouncing back with a 6-3 win over VCU after falling 14-5 to Illinois in the opener.
With the victory in game two, the Chanticleers improved to 5-2 on the season.
Trace Mazon led the way offensively against VCU, hitting two home runs and driving in three runs. Mazon gave Coastal an early spark with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning before adding his second long ball of the day in the sixth to help extend the lead.
Daniel Parker made the start and tossed three innings, striking out three. Darin Horn followed with six strong innings in relief, striking out six to earn the win and improve to 2-0 on the season.
In Sunday's opener against Illinois, Coastal fell behind 7-0 after the first inning and could not recover in the 14-5 loss. Domenico Tozzi highlighted the Chanticleer offense with a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning.
Coastal will return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 24, hosting Campbell at 4 p.m. at Springs Brooks Stadium.
