CONWAY, S.C. — Coastal Carolina led by seven in the final two minutes, but Arkansas State rallied late and escaped the HTC Center with a 70-66 win on Wednesday night.
The Chanticleers (14-11, 7-6 Sun Belt) were in control at 63-56 with 1:20 remaining before the Red Wolves closed the game on a 14-3 run, capped by a putback with one second left.
"It's unfortunate that we didn't finish the game off with a win, but our guys fought and competed for 40 minutes," Chanticleer head coach
Justin Gray said. "There are some plays we'd like to have back, but I'm proud of those guys for stepping up, trying to make the plays whether they went their way or didn't go their way. We'll learn from this and we'll get better."
Joshua Beadle scored 16 points to lead Coastal, while
AJ Dancler added 12 and scored his 1,000th career point.
Rasheed Jones finished with eight points and a career-high eight assists.
Reggie Hill chipped in eight points on a pair of 3-pointers.
Coastal appeared poised to secure the victory after building its late seven-point cushion, but Arkansas State answered with consecutive 3-pointers to pull within one. The Red Wolves took the lead on a driving layup with 42 seconds remaining before T.J. Caldwell made two free throws to extend the margin to three.
The Chanticleers responded when
Braeden MacVicar was fouled on a 3-point attempt and converted all three free throws to tie the game at 66 with 18 seconds remaining.
Arkansas State (14-10, 6-6) missed a layup on the ensuing possession, but Jalen Hampton secured the offensive rebound, and the Chants were whistled for goaltending on his putback attempt with 1.8 seconds left to give the Red Wolves the lead. Coastal turned the ball over on the ensuing possession, and Arkansas State sealed the outcome at the free-throw line.
Christian Harmon led Arkansas State with 16 points, while Joey Chammaa scored 13 and Matt Hayman added 12.
Coastal shot evenly with Arkansas State from the field but was hurt by turnovers and second-chance points. The Chanticleers committed 16 turnovers and were out-rebounded 41-36, with Arkansas State grabbing 15 offensive boards.
The Chanticleers return to action Saturday, Feb. 7, against UMass as part of the SBC-MAC Challenge. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m. inside the HTC Center.
