ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina softball team clipped the Winthrop Eagles, 2-1, in extra innings on Wednesday afternoon in Rock Hill, S.C.
Coastal's pitching was on top form to start the contest, as
McKennah Metzger opened the game with three 1-2-3 frames before
Abby Henderson entered the circle in the top of the fourth inning.
The first hit of the game came in the bottom of the fifth inning when Tia Beckham led off with a single, but Henderson retired the next three batters to keep the score at 0-0.
The Eagles threatened in the bottom of the sixth inning, putting runners on second and third via an error, a wild pitch, and a fielder's choice, but the Chants kept their composure to escape the inning unscathed.
In the top of the eighth inning,
Hannah Bendle recorded Coastal's first hit of the game, blasting a two-run home run over the center field wall to give Coastal a 2-0 lead.
Winthrop clawed a run back in the bottom of the eighth inning when Peyton Bryton delivered an RBI single to third base, but it was not enough to stop the Chants.
Kate Ryan improve to 3-0 in the circle, giving up just one run off two hits across her 3.0 innings of work.
The Chants will remain on the road for a three-game series against the James Madison Dukes on March 20–22.
