JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Coastal Carolina could not overcome a five-goal first-quarter deficit in a 10-6 loss at Jacksonville in the Atlantic Sun Conference opener for both teams on Thursday afternoon.
The Chanticleers fell to 6-3 overall and 0-1 in ASUN play, while Jacksonville improved to 5-2 (1-0).
Jacksonville scored five times in the opening period to take early control, but Coastal Carolina responded by holding the Dolphins scoreless in the second quarter while cutting the deficit to 5-3 at halftime.
Alyson Mascolo and Nikki Seven led the Chanticleers with two goals apiece.
Sophie Kingsborough and
Megan Hummel each scored once, and
Alexandra Horn recorded an assist.
The Chanticleers pulled within two late in the first half, but Jacksonville answered with four goals in the third quarter to extend its lead to 9-4. Coastal Carolina added two fourth-quarter goals but was unable to draw closer than three down the stretch.
Charlotte Sadler made eight saves in goal for Coastal Carolina, which finished with 28 shots and a perfect 21-for-21 mark on clears.
Jacksonville was paced by Maeve Brennan's five goals and controlled the draw circle, winning 12 draw controls to Coastal's six.
Coastal Carolina continues its road trip to the Sunshine State on Saturday at Stetson. The first draw is scheduled for noon.
