NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Sun Belt Conference has announced its postseason awards with
Kinsea Grimes winning Sun Belt Freshman of the Year and
Kristin Williams being named to the All-Sun Belt Third Team.
Grimes made an immediate impact in her freshman season, averaging 11.3 points per game and ranking among the freshman leaders in the Sun Belt. She became the first true freshman at Coastal to average double-digit points since Shatia Cole in the 2011-12 season. Grimes became a fixture in the Chanticleer startling lineup, starting 18 of 29 games played with 16 double-digit point performances. She scored a career-high 25 points vs. Gardner Webb on Nov. 30 while posting her first double-double of her career with 11 rebounds. In Sun Belt play, Grimes ranked 10th in the conference with a free-throw percentage of 78%.
Grimes is the first Coastal player to win the conference freshman of the year award since Brooke Weisbrod in 1997-98 and just the second player in school history to receive the award.
In her graduate season, Williams ranked second on the team with 13.0 points per game, placing her in the top-20 in the Sun Belt. Williams continued her sharp-shooting, making 87 three-pointers to break the single-season school record. She ranked second in the conference with 2.8 three-pointers per game and three-point percentage at 37%. Williams scored her 1,000th career college point against South Alabama on Jan. 17.
Coastal Carolina will meet the winner of South Alabama and Appalachian State in Sun Belt Conference Championship Tournament on March 4 at 12:30 p.m. ET at the Pensacola Bay Center in Pensacola, Fla.
