CONWAY, S.C. – No.16 Coastal Carolina used a six-run fourth inning and a dominant outing on the mound to run-rule James Madison, 10-0, in seven innings on Saturday at Springs Brooks Stadium.
The Chanticleers broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning and never looked back, plating six runs in the frame to take control. Blagen Pado got things started with a bunt single that brought home Walker Mitchell from third. With the bases loaded later in the inning, Brice Estep was hit by a pitch to force in another run and extend the lead to 2-0.
Pado later scored on a passed ball to make it 3-0 before Trace Mazon delivered the big swing of the inning, launching a three-run home run, his fourth of the season, to push the Coastal advantage to 6-0.
The Chanticleers added to their lead in the sixth inning, as Dean Mihos connected on a solo home run, his fourth of the year, to make it 7-0. Mitchell followed with an RBI double later in the frame to stretch the lead to 8-0.
In the bottom of the seventh, Mihos capped off the afternoon with a walk-off RBI single to complete the run rule and secure the 10-0 victory.
Including Mihos, four Chants had two hits on the day (Mazon, Barthol, Thorndyke).
On the mound, Ross Norman was dominant, tossing a complete game shutout over seven innings. The right-hander allowed just three hits while striking out six to earn the win (3-2).
With the victory, Coastal Carolina improves to 15-7 overall and 5-0 in Sun Belt Conference play. Dating back to last season, the Chanticleers have now won 10 consecutive Sun Belt Conference series.
Coastal Carolina will look to complete the series sweep against JMU in Sunday's finale at 1 p.m. The game will air on ESPN+.
