Big First Half Powers Women's Lacrosse Past Austin Peay

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team used a dominant first half and a balanced offensive attack to earn a 17-5 Atlantic Sun Conference victory over Austin Peay on Saturday morning at Brooks Stadium.

The Chanticleers improved to 8-4 overall and 1-2 in ASUN play, while the Governors dropped to 4-8 and 0-3 in league action.

Coastal Carolina set the tone early, scoring five goals in the opening quarter behind strikes from Megan Hummel, Alyson Mascolo, Sophie Kingsborough and Gabrielle Beaudet. The Chants carried that momentum into the second period, erupting for six more goals to take an 11-1 lead into halftime.

The Chants' offense was led by Kingsborough, who recorded a career-high five goals. Carleigh Patterson added three goals and an assist, while Alexandra Horn tallied a goal and three assists. Beaudet finished with two goals, and seven players contributed to the team's nine assists.

Coastal Carolina capitalized on its opportunities throughout the contest, scoring three free-position goals and adding three player-up scores. The Chants also controlled possession with a 16-8 advantage in draw controls and held a 31-14 edge in total shots.

Defensively, Coastal limited Austin Peay to just one goal over the first two quarters and five total on the day. Goalkeeper Charlotte Sadler earned the win with five saves in the opening half, while Kylie Pastor played the entire second half.

Austin Peay was led by Fiona Lemke and Sophia Schwab, who each scored two goals, while Kearston Jackson added a goal and an assist.

After extending its lead to 14-3 through three quarters, Coastal Carolina added three more goals in the final period, including two late tallies from Kingsborough and another from Nikki Seven, to seal the 12-goal victory.

Coastal Carolina will return to action on Friday, April 3, against ASUN foe Lindenwood in St. Charles, Mo.
