JONESBORO, Ark. – For the second straight night, No. 10/11 Coastal Carolina came through in the ninth inning, as Walker Mitchell's go-ahead RBI single lifted the Chanticleers to a 4-3 win over Arkansas State on Saturday night to clinch the weekend series.
A day after erupting for seven runs in the ninth inning to steal the series opener, Coastal Carolina picked up right where it left off.
With the game tied at 3-3 in the top of the ninth, Dean Mihos opened the inning with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Blake Barthol. That set the stage for Mitchell's decisive blow, as he delivered an RBI single to score Mihos and give the Chanticleers a 4-3 lead.
Mitchell finished the night 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs. Mihos paced the Coastal offense, going 4-for-5 with a double, while Rex Watson and Barthol each added a pair of hits.
Out of the bullpen, Darin Horn improved to 5-0 on the season, striking out four over 1.2 scoreless innings while allowing just one hit. Ryan Lynch followed by closing out the game in the ninth to earn his fourth save of the year and second in as many nights.
With the win, Coastal Carolina improves to 26-8 overall and 13-1 in Sun Belt Conference play.
The Chanticleers will look to complete the series sweep on Sunday afternoon, with first pitch set for 12 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
