CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina dropped the series finale to Texas State, falling 10-6 on Sunday afternoon at Springs Brooks Stadium, but secured the Sun Belt Conference series win by taking two of three games over the weekend.
Making his first start since Opening Day on February 13 against Fairfield, right-hander Cameron Flukey was sharp in a limited outing. The junior tossed two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and no walks while striking out four.
The Chanticleers struck first, capitalizing on a fielding error by the Bobcats to score Dean Mihos from third and take a 1-0 lead in the opening inning. However, Texas State responded in the third, as Jaquae Stewart connected for a two-out grand slam to swing the momentum in favor of the visitors.
Coastal continued to battle back and found itself within striking distance late. Trailing 8-5 in the bottom of the eighth, Blake Barthol launched a solo home run to right field, his fourth of the season, to cut the deficit to 8-6. The Chants were unable to get any closer, as Texas State added two insurance runs in the ninth, both via wild pitch.
With the loss, Coastal Carolina moves to 30-13 overall and 17-4 in Sun Belt Conference play.
The Chanticleers will return to action on Tuesday, traveling to Chapel Hill to take on No. 2 North Carolina. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. on ACC Network.
