CONWAY, S.C. – No. 8 Coastal Carolina dropped Sunday's rubber match of its Sun Belt Conference series to Old Dominion, falling 9-2 at Springs Brooks Stadium.
The Monarchs struck quickly, as leadoff hitter Will Johnson opened the game with a solo home run to give Old Dominion an early 1-0 lead. ODU added to its advantage with four runs over the third and fourth innings to move in front 5-0.
The Chanticleers broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning when Jackson Winer lined an RBI single to score Rex Watson from second base and trim the deficit to 5-1.
After the Monarchs added another run in the top of the seventh, Coastal answered in the bottom half of the inning. With the bases loaded, Watson brought home a run on a fielder's choice to make it a 6-2 game.
Old Dominion added three more insurance runs over the final two innings and held the Chanticleers scoreless the rest of the way to secure the series victory.
Winer and Watson each drove in a run for Coastal Carolina, while Dean Mihos had a pair of hits.
With the loss, Coastal Carolina moved to 34-17 overall and 20-7 in Sun Belt Conference play. The defeat also snapped the Chanticleers' 16 consecutive conference series wins dating back to last season.
Coastal Carolina will return to action on Tuesday night for its regular-season home finale against The Citadel. First pitch from Springs Brooks Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
