Baseball Season Ends With Weather-Marred Loss To Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Cal Fisher broke a tie with a solo home run in the fifth inning, and Florida State held Coastal Carolina to three hits in a 2-1 victory Sunday morning in an NCAA Tallahassee Regional elimination game at Dick Howser Stadium.

The game, which began Saturday afternoon, was interrupted by two lengthy weather delays. After a 2-hour, 32-minute delay in the fourth inning, play resumed before another round of severe weather forced a second delay at 6:13 p.m. The contest was officially suspended later that evening and resumed Sunday morning.

Florida State (39-18) advanced in the regional, while Coastal Carolina saw its season come to an end at 37-23.

The Chanticleers struck first in the third inning when Trace Mazon delivered a two-out RBI single to score Walker Mitchell for a 1-0 lead.

Florida State answered in the fourth after the lengthy weather delay. Hunter Carns drew a walk and later scored on Nathan Cmeyla's RBI double to right-center field, tying the game at 1-1.
Fisher then provided the decisive blow an inning later, launching a solo home run to left field for his third homer of the season and a 2-1 Seminole advantage.

The Seminoles' pitching staff made the lead stand. Florida State starter Wes Mendes struck out eight over four innings before Brodie Purcell (4-2) earned the win with a scoreless fifth inning. Trey Beard worked the final four innings for his first save, striking out nine and allowing just one hit. Florida State pitchers combined to strike out 18 Coastal batters.

Coastal starter Cameron Flukey allowed one run on two hits over 3 1/3 innings before the first weather delay. Darin Horn (8-2) took the loss after surrendering the go-ahead homer, while Luke Jones tossed three scoreless innings of relief with four strikeouts.

Mazon accounted for two of Coastal Carolina's three hits and drove in the team's lone run. Dean Mihos added the Chanticleers' only other hit as Coastal was limited to three hits and went 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position.

Florida State finished with eight hits, led by Fisher's two-hit performance and Carns' two-hit day.
