LAFAYETTE, La. – The Coastal Carolina softball team defeated the No. 7 seeded Georgia Southern Eagles 6-2 on Wednesday evening to advance to the Sun Belt Conference tournament quarterfinals.
Coastal struck early in the top of the first inning, as
Kaelin Cash drove in
Georgia Hood with a sacrifice fly to give the Chants a 1-0 lead.
The Chants added another run in the second inning when
Clara Hudgens delivered an RBI single to extend the lead to 2-0.
Coastal continued to build momentum in the third inning, plating three runs behind an RBI single from
McKennah Metzger, an RBI double by
Libby Pippin, and a sacrifice fly from
Izzy Ramirez to stretch the advantage to 5-0.
Georgia Southern responded in the bottom half of the inning, as Braelyn Queen laced a two-run double to left-center field to cut the deficit to 5-2.
Hood added an insurance run in the fourth inning, blasting a solo home run over the left-center field wall to push the lead to 6-2.
The Eagles threatened in both the sixth and seventh innings, but Coastal stranded two runners in each frame to secure the victory.
Abby Henderson improved to 8-14 in the circle, tossing 4.0 shutout innings while allowing just three hits.
The Chants will face No. 2 seed Marshall in the quarterfinals on May 7 at 2 p.m. ET.
