Chris Powers Announces Six Signees for Fall 2026

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team announced six new signings to its 2026 fall roster.
The Chants will welcome one freshman in Renato Mathier, and four transfers in Maxim Michaels, Simon Muntwyler, Itamar Tapiro, Gustav Andersson, and Bassil Touban.
"It's been a busy recruiting cycle, and I believe there is a great foundation for the next chapter of the program. Rebuilding the team from basically scratch is always a challenge, but a lot of the important pieces are there for our eventual success," state head coach Chris Powers. "I feel great about these new guys and the process of rebuilding the new culture begins. I am big on bringing in guys who want to specifically be part of Coastal Carolina, and all of these guys are ready to BLEED TEAL for the program."
Renato Mathier
A native of Freyre, Argentina, Mathier reached as high as No. 3 in Argentina's national junior rankings and No. 15 in the national professional rankings. He captured the 2024 J100 Mendoza doubles title and finished as the doubles runner-up at the 2023 J100 Cochabamba and J100 Mendoza tournaments. In 2025, he claimed five tournament titles in France, winning the Saint-Savournin Cup, Alleins Cup, Trets Cup, TC Pennois Open, and Rognes Cup.

"Renato was an early signee that I was excited to lock down. Renato is known for his grit and willingness to leave it all out there. He will be our sole freshman this year, and I am excited to see him learn from the veteran players in the program."
Maxim Michaels
A native of West Palm Beach, Fla., Michaels transfers to Coastal after three seasons at Hofstra. He earned All-CAA Third Team honors and was named the CAA Player of the Week during his sophomore year before redshirting his junior season. Over his collegiate career, Michaels compiled a 12-22 singles record and a 15-17 doubles mark.

"Maxim is a lefty player who is transferring from Hofstra. Maxim is a worker that will be committed to bringing out his best to the practice and the match court. He is also a very solid doubles player which is something that we emphasize here at CCU. "
Simon Muntwyler
A native of Uster, Switzerland, Muntwyler transfers to Coastal Carolina after one season at William Carey. He enjoyed an outstanding freshman campaign, posting an undefeated 11-0 singles record, earning victories over four nationally ranked programs, including two wins against No. 9 Xavier, one over No. 24 Loyola, and one over No. 25 UT Southern. He also compiled a 5-2 doubles record, highlighted by a ranked doubles victory over No. 24 Loyola.

"Simon is really excited for his next opportunity here at CCU. He has some excellent results back in Europe and I am looking forward to seeing that translate to the college Division 1 level. I am looking for him to arrive hungry to battle this fall."
Itamar Tapiro
A native of Pardes Hanna, Israel, Tapiro joins the Chanticleers after spending the last two seasons at the University of Delaware. During his collegiate career with the Blue Hens, he compiled a 24-13 singles record and a 14-10 doubles mark. As a sophomore, Tapiro earned an ITA national doubles ranking of No. 62 alongside Federico Garbero and teamed up to win nine consecutive doubles matches from Sept. 26 through Jan. 30.

"Itamar brings a lot of valuable experience to the program from Delaware. He earned some huge wins against some of our common opponents on the singles court and he's also been nationally ranked in doubles. He is known for his toughness and tenaciousness."
Gustav Andersson
A native of Hjo, Sweden, Andersson transfers to Coastal Carolina after one season at Georgia State. He appeared in 21 of the Panthers' 22 matches, posting a team-best 9-8 singles record while adding an 8-9 mark in doubles play. Andersson also enjoyed a strong start to the doubles season, starting the year with a 6-1 record over his first seven doubles matches.

"I had to pleasure to watch Gustav play on several occasions as member of Georgia State this Spring. When he became available, it was a no brainer to pursue him as a transfer. He earned some impressive wins in the Sun Belt Conference as well as against some of our common opponents."
Bassil Touban
Transfer junior Touban comes to Coastal after spending one season each at Long Island University and St. John's. The Maspeth, N.Y., native, has garnered many accolades during his collegiate career including NEC Co-Player of the Month honors, All-NEC Second Team recognition, and a spot on the NEC All-Rookie Team.

"Bassil is hungry to prove himself at a higher level Division I program. He has a track record of improvement from year to year over his career so I am excited what that brings here at Coastal Carolina. He already has some college tennis experience under his belt as well."
