Volleyball Drops Sun Belt Opener To Georgia Southern

CONWAY, S.C. – Georgia Southern held off a Coastal Carolina rally in the opening set and defeated the Chanticleers 3-0 Friday night at the HTC Center, handing Coastal its first loss in a Sun Belt Conference opener.
The Eagles (9-4, 1-0 Sun Belt) won 30-28, 25-16, 25-21. Coastal (4-6, 0-1) had won its first 10 conference openers since joining the Sun Belt in 2016.
Hatteras Welker matched her season high with 12 kills and hit .500. She also had two service aces and three blocks. Natalie Hughes added eight kills, and Jonna Spohn led Coastal with 18 digs. Kaylee Musick recorded a double-double with 34 assists and 10 digs.
Anzley Rinard entered the match four kills shy of 500 for her career and reached the mark during a five-kill performance.
The Chanticleers trailed 18-12 in the first set before pulling even at 24 on consecutive kills by Anna Rita. Coastal tied the score four more times, the last at 28, before Reagan Barth closed the set with back-to-back kills.
Georgia Southern built a 22-13 lead in the second set. Coastal made another push late in the third, scoring four straight points to trim a 23-16 deficit to 23-20, before the Eagles finished the match.
Barth led Georgia Southern with 16 kills. The teams meet again Saturday at 2 p.m. at the HTC Center.
