Thomas Gentile joined the Coastal Carolina University athletics department as an assistant director of speed, strength and conditioning in August 2020. He works directly with the baseball program.
Gentile came to Coastal after working for five years as a minor league performance coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers organization from 2015-20. Based out of Glendale, Ariz., he worked with the Dodgers Arizona League affiliate for three seasons (2015, 2016, and 2019), the Class A affiliate Great Lake Loons in Midland, Mich. one season (2017), and the short-season affiliate Ogden Raptors in Ogden, Utah (2018) as well.
He assisted with the development and implementation of all aspects of performance, nutrition, and recovery for the players, as well as the rehab and return to play progressions for injured players. He was also responsible for tracking individual and team in-season workloads for more accurate program individuation and the implemented and administered individual off-season training programs for each player as they prepared for the upcoming seasons.
During his time with the Dodgers organization, the team won back-to-back National League (NL) Pennants in 2017 and 2018 and went to back-to-back World Series those same seasons. The Dodgers also won five-straight NL West Division titles from 2015 to 2019.
Before making the move to professional baseball, Gentile worked in the collegiate ranks at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) for two years first serving as an athletic performance intern in 2014 before accepting a full-time role as an assistant athletic performance coach with the Bruins in 2015.
While at UCLA, Gentile worked directly with the UCLA baseball and both men’s and women’s track & field teams.
Gentile broke into the profession as a strength and condition intern at the University of Cincinnati from 2012-13 in which he assisted with ten different varsity sports programs.
An NSCA-Certified strength and conditioning specialist, Gentile is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
Gentile graduated from Cincinnati in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in health education, exercise and fitness. He went on to earn his master’s degree in exercise science, fitness and conditioning from Arizona State in 2018.
While at Cincinnati, Gentile was a pitcher and outfielder on the baseball team for the Bearcats from 2009-13. He was a two-time All-Big East All-Academic team selection and a University of Cincinnati Legion of Excellence Inductee in 2013, the highest academic honor for student-athletes at the university.
