Former Chanticleer golfer Andrew Roy was named the men's golf assistant head coach in August 2019.

In his first season in 2019-20, which was shortened due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Chanticleers posted five top-10 team finishes highlighted by a 54-hole team score of 846, -18 under par, at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate. As a team, the Chants' season stroke average of 289.84 ranks as the fifth-lowest in school history.

The 2019-20 Chants posted the second-best par-4 (4.1582) and par-5 (4.7769) scoring averages in single-season history with both marks behind only the 2006-07 team.

Senior Zack Taylor became just the second Chant to win Coastal Carolina's annual home tournament, the General Hackler Championship, with a 54-hole score of 208, -8 under par, while posting a season scoring average of 70.79, the second-lowest in CCU's single-season history.

Taylor went on to earn GCAA/Ping All-Region honors for the second-straight season, becoming just the third Chant in CCU history to earn the regional accolade more than once in his career.

Prior to returning to his alma mater, Roy played professionally on the NEPGA circuit as well as the Minor League Tour in South Florida after graduating in 2018 from Coastal Carolina.

“I’m excited to announce that Andrew is returning to our program as an assistant coach. As a former player, his loyalty and love of this program runs deep. His personality and passion for the game will be a great asset to not only our current student-athletes but to the entire Coastal Athletics Department, our supporters, and University,” stated head coach Jim Garren. “At Coastal men’s golf we hold ourselves to a higher standard with everything associated within the program and everyone has to be accountable. Having played here under our system, Andrew has a great understanding of that and it makes him a perfect fit in helping us continue to grow our program into one of the best in the country.”

While playing professionally for a little over a year, Roy posted several top-10 individual finishes including placing seventh at the 2018 Atlantic National December Classic and eighth overall at the 2018 12th annual Holiday Team Championship. He also finished in a tie for 12th at the 2018 10th annual Par-3 Team Trilogy event and 14th at the 2018 New England Open.

As an amateur, he finished 11th at the 2017 Rhode Island Open and 17th at the 2017 Rhode Island Amateur, and while playing for the Chants he finished tied for ninth at the 2018 Bash at the Beach.

In his lone season as a Chant, in which the Coastal won the 2018 Sun Belt Men’s Golf Championship, Roy posted a 75.23 stroke average over eight events in 2017-18, which included a low-round 68 and five rounds of par or better. He wrapped up his Coastal career with a round of 75 on the third and final round of play at the 2018 NCAA Kissimmee Regional at the Watson Course at Reunion Resort. Roy was added to the lineup for the final round as a substitute and birdied his final hole.

Roy joined the team for the 2017-18 season from the school’s PGA Golf Management Program.
