Susan Clements

Susan Clements enters her first season as an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator for the Coastal Carolina volleyball squad.

"I am very excited to have Susan join our coaching staff! She was an excellent player, and an All-American outside hitter at the NAIA level. She has had a successful head coaching experience while at Wright State University and Niagara University. She was Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Coach of the Year in 2009," said Forman. "During her last five years as a recruiting coordinator at Chapel Hill in ACC, she had top 15 recruiting classes for multiple years. It is no doubt that Susan is a great coach, an experienced recruiter, and very knowledgeable of the administrative processes, who will help to continue our winning culture at Coastal!"

Clements arrives at Coastal Carolina after spending the previous five years at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., where she was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Tar Heels. In her tenure at UNC, Clements recruited the three top-15 classes, including the ninth and 10th nationally-ranked recruiting classes in 2019 and 2022, respectively. The 2023 Tar Heels' recruiting class was ranked the 14th-best class by Prep Volleyball.

Before UNC, Clements was the head coach at Wright State for six seasons from 2012-17. Her final recruiting class in 2018 went on to become Horizon League Champions and participated in the NCAA tournament in 2019, 2020, and 2022.

Prior to Wright State, Clements was the head coach at Niagara for five seasons. Clements directed the Purple Eagles to a 25-9 record in 2011 and the MAAC regular-season title for the second consecutive year with a mark of 17-1. Niagara also won its third straight MAAC tournament crown in 2011 and made its third consecutive appearance in the NCAA tournament, falling to Northern Iowa.

The Purple Eagles set a school record for regular-season wins (23) in 2011 while tying the record for overall victories (25) and conference wins (17) that were set the season before. In 2009, Clements was named the MAAC Coach of the Year and College Volleyball Update National Coach of the Year after guiding the Purple Eagles to a 23-9 record and the program's first NCAA Tournament berth.

Niagara excelled in the classroom under Clement's tutelage. The Purple Eagles placed eight student-athletes on the MAAC All-Academic List in 2010 and seven in 2009. The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) rewarded Niagara as one of 92 NCAA Division I programs to earn the prestigious team academic award for the third straight season (2008-10). The team's grade-point average of 3.64 was the highest GPA amongst the 18 athletic programs at Niagara for the second straight season.

Clements came to Niagara from Georgetown College in Kentucky, where she was the head coach of the Lady Tiger program in 2005 and 2006. Accumulating a 74-25 record in two seasons, the Lady Tigers won the Mid-South Tournament and Region XI titles and earned a berth into the NAIA National Championship Tournament. In 2014, Clements was inducted into the Georgetown Athletics Hall of Fame.

Clements has coached at Nike High Performance camps and still works several elite summer camps at the University of North Carolina. A native of Lynchburg, Virginia, Clements earned a Master of Arts in interdisciplinary studies from Niagara in 2011 and a Bachelor of Science in kinesiology and sport science from Georgetown College in 2002.
