Coastal Carolina beat University of Baltimore Maryland County 3-1 Sunday morning. The match began with UMBC taking the lead in the first game. Coastal came back and was leading 11- 10 when they broke down mentally. UMBC went on to score the next 5 points and win the game. The second game bounced back and forth before Coastal won 15-13. Coastal took control of game three with a 10-6 lead. UMBC came back with some tough serving and strong net play to gain the lead at 11-10. Coastal then took advantage of a communication error by UMBC to gain the serve. Two straight blocks put Coastal back up 12-11 and they never looked back with a 15-11 win. With the momentum against them UMBC made some strategical changes to begin game four. UMBC's changes along with a mental let down by Coastal gave UMBC a 7-0 lead. Coastal fought back to 8-4 and 10-9. UMBC countered with two straight points before Coastal came to within one at 12-13. With the end within reach Coastal surged to a 15-13 win. Coastal was lead by the strong play of Roberta Croteau who had 23 kills, 23 digs, 2 aces, 2 blocks, and passed 2.75 on a 3 point scale. Amy Bambenek had a strong game with 20 kills, 15 digs, 2 blocks, and 2 aces. Autumn Staub added 15 kills, 2 aces and 5 blocks. Emma Prowse had 15 kills and 10 digs. Colette Pawlyk set well with 61 assists and 11 digs. Wendy Kutz, Alicia Pulchinski, Amy O'Neil, and Nicole Burns also played well in contributing to the win.
Saturday afternoon in their opening match of the Big South Conference, Coastal beat UNC Greensboro 3-0. The first game began with a strong surge by Greensboro, but Coastal quickly gained control and went on the win 15-10. With the first game behind them Coastal did a good job of maintaining the momentum for the majority of the second and third game (15-8, 15-8). Coastal displayed a very balanced attack that was backed by consistent court play by all of the players. Autumn Staub recorded 17 kills in route to a .407 hitting %. Amy Bambenek had 15 kills and 11 digs. Emma Prowse added 11 kills and 2 blocks. Wendy Kutz put in a strong effort with 8 kills (.389 hitting %), 3 blocks, and 11 digs. Defensively the Coastal got a strong boost from Roberta Croteau (16 digs, 13 kills), Alicia Pulchinski (13 digs), and Amy O'Neil (she came in with precision passing and freeball play when it was most needed).
