Box Score Women's Soccer Falls to UNCA, 2-1 SPARTANBURG, S.C.— UNC Asheville scored two goals in the first half and the Bulldogs held on in the second half to record a 2-1 Big South Conference women's soccer victory over Coastal Carolina at Greenwood Field Friday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (1-3 Big South, 4-6-0) got goals from Olivia Korman and Ellen Sims in the first half to grab a 2-0 first half. The Chanticleers (0-3 Big South, 1-8-2) picked up a goal from Jennifer Maxwell in the second half and had some other chances to tie the game but UNCA goalkeeper Mary Elizabeth Scherger made some big saves in the final 20 minutes to help the Bulldogs break a two-game losing streak.
"This is a big win for us," stated UNC Asheville coach Michele Cornish. "We really did a good job converting on some opportunities in the first half. We hung on in the second half, and Mary Elizabeth made some big saves when we had to have her come up big."
The Bulldogs opened the scoring when Korman scored on a direct kick from 18 yards out at the 20:16 mark to make it, 1-0. Asheville picked up its second goal 12 minutes later when Sims scored off a pass from freshman defender Erin Trignoplos to pad the lead, 2-0.
Maxwell scored for CCU at the 56:36 mark of the second half off a pass from Leah Barrett to cut the lead to 2-1. The Lady Chanticleers had some chances but Scherger made four saves in the final 15 minutes of the game to keep Coastal from tying the match.
