Box Score Volleyball Falls to Winthrop 3-1 CONWAY, S.C. — The Coastal Carolina volleyball team took the court against a strong Winthrop side Tuesday night, dropping a heartbreaker 3-1. Winthrop entered the game undefeated in Big South play, and had not lost a match since September 15th.
From the beginning this was a battle of intensity, and the Eagles (11-6 overall, 5-0 in the Big South) were full of the energy needed to compete for each point and the inevitably win the match. Unfortunately for the Lady Chants (4-10, 2-2) they could not break Winthrop's win streak. Winthrop's Erin Lehman set the career record for kills during the match. She now has 1258 kills breaking the old record of 1256 held by Kara Galer.
There were many momentum shifts, which Coastal coach Kristen Bauer contributed to the reoccurrence of the same mistakes throughout the evening. She also said that the team was making mental errors that shouldn't be made at home, but they stuck with one of the toughest teams in the conference, and at times tested the Lady Eagles.
Coastal's Katie Knutson led the game with 14 kills, who also showed a powerful jump-serve which served as a momentum gainer for the Lady Chants throughout the match. The Chanticleer setter Sarah Besemer had 45 assists during the match as the ladies of the put up a good fight against a very tough and intense opponent.
The Lady Chanticleers take back to the home court Wednesday October 3rd at 7:00pm against the College of Charleston.
